Jispa vs Sarchu: Where Should You Stay on the Manali-Leh Highway?

The Jispa vs Sarchu Question

Every traveler planning the Manali-Leh Highway eventually faces this decision: stop at Jispa (120 km from Manali) or push on to Sarchu (222 km from Manali) for the first night. Both are popular overnight stops. Both have their advocates. But they are fundamentally different experiences — and the right choice depends entirely on your circumstances.

  • Setting: Riverside, green valley, dramatic mountain backdrop

Sarchu at a Glance

Key Comparison: Jispa vs Sarchu

Altitude and Health

This is the most important factor. Sarchu sits at 4,290 metres — well above the altitude where altitude sickness becomes a real risk for unacclimatized travelers. Many people experience headaches, nausea, and poor sleep at Sarchu, even if they felt fine all day during the drive. Jispa at 3,200 metres is much safer for a first night — high enough to begin acclimatizing, low enough to sleep well.

Comfort

Jispa wins decisively. The Hermitage Lahaul in Jispa offers luxury riverside camps with premium beds, private bathrooms, 24-hour hot water, and electricity. Sarchu's accommodation consists of basic seasonal tents — functional but not comfortable. After a long day on mountain roads, the difference in quality of rest is significant.

Journey Length

Sarchu requires an additional 3–4 hours of driving compared to Jispa. That's 7–8 hours total on mountain roads — arriving tired, often after dark, at a high-altitude camp. Jispa allows you to stop at a natural, comfortable point and tackle the harder stretch (Baralacha La and beyond) fresh the next morning.

Food

Jispa: in-house restaurant with Himachali and multi-cuisine dishes, freshly prepared three times a day. Sarchu: basic dhaba-style food, limited variety, no guarantee of fresh preparation. After a long day in the mountains, a proper hot meal makes a real difference.

Who Should Choose Sarchu?

Experienced high-altitude travelers who want to complete the journey faster — particularly those on motorcycles who are acclimatized from prior Himalayan trips and want to minimize their total days on the road. If you have done Leh several times and know how your body handles altitude, Sarchu works. For everyone else, Jispa is the safer, more comfortable choice.

Our Recommendation

For most travelers — especially those doing the Manali-Leh route for the first time, families, and anyone who values sleep and comfort over speed — Jispa is the better overnight stop. A well-rested, properly fed traveler arriving at Baralacha La the next morning is in a far better position than someone who pushed to Sarchu and slept poorly at altitude.
